The Gifter’s Guide to Scents for People With Allergies

Choosing a fragrance to give as a gift to someone who you know has allergies but who loves perfume can be a tricky task. Let us look in a little more detail at what causes allergies and what can be done to reduce their effects and equip you to make the best perfume choice.

Understanding Allergies

Allergies can range from mild skin irritation all the way through to severe respiratory issues. One of the most common allergic reactions is rhinitis. This presents as a runny nose, often accompanied by difficulty breathing and sneezing.

The poor allergy sufferer may also experience itchy eyes, nose and throat. Culprits include pollen, dust mites, pet dander, mould spores and, unfortunately, also some ingredients in fragranced products, so finding the right fragrance is essential.

What Does Hypoallergenic Mean?

Hypoallergenic products (including cosmetics and textiles) are less likely to cause an allergic reaction because they contain fewer or no components considered allergens (substances that cause allergic reactions).

As there is currently no legislation to govern this, products labelled “hypoallergenic” are not entirely risk-free. However, such labels often indicate that greater care has been taken to make them less likely to cause an allergic reaction.

Common Perfume Allergy Ingredients

Where the perfume itself is the cause of the allergy, the following ingredients can be to blame:

  • Synthetic Ingredients: Certain synthetic compounds, including phthalates, can irritate the skin and trigger allergic reactions.
  • Skin Type: Some skin types are far more sensitive to perfume ingredients, making those individuals more likely to experience an allergic reaction to perfume ingredients.
  • Weakened Immune Systems: People with low immunity are often more likely to suffer from an allergic reaction. Boosting the immune systems with Vitamin C and D, zinc, probiotics and Omega-3 fatty acids can help to reduce allergic reactions.
  • Genetics: It is often seen that allergies run in families, as their source is a genetic predisposition to be sensitive to specific allergens.

Choosing a Scent for People With Allergies

  • Ask Them: The best way to go about choosing a fragrance for your loved one with allergies is to ask them which fragrances work for them. While this may not seem ideal, it is probably the safest, and the considerate gesture will be appreciated!
  • Look for Natural Fragrances: When in doubt, choose perfumes that contain essential oils and botanical extracts, as these are often gentler on the skin and less likely to produce an allergic reaction.
  • Subtle Scents: Softer, more subtle fragrances are often better choices than heavy, overpowering scents. Light florals and fresh citrus scents are good choices here.

By following these tips, you can carefully and thoughtfully choose a fragrance gift that even the most sensitive loved one will appreciate.
